A Comparison of Composite and Wood Decking

Something that can really enhance your home enjoying experience is having an outdoor space that encourages relaxation or gathering. One of the first steps to creating that space is building a patio or deck as your focal point. When building a patio or deck, there are two main materials you can choose from: wood and composite. Which one should you go with? Let’s break down the pros and cons to each.

Solid Wood

Many people are drawn to the classic, natural aspect of solid wood as a material. They like the feel of it, they like the look of it. They like that it can be sanded and stained to give it a new life and fresh look. It fits in very well with the nature surrounding it since it was taken from nature.

Solid wood is also cheaper to build with compared with composite, but that mostly comes down to the fact that wood doesn’t last as long as composite. On average, a well-cared for wood deck will last anywhere from 10-20 years. Not to mention that solid wood requires a bit more care than composite. For it to remain in good condition for years to come, regular sanding, staining, and sealing is essential.

Solid wood does a better job at regulating heat. So, if you like being able to walk barefoot on your deck even on the hottest days of Summer, a solid wood deck is a better choice.

Composite

While composite is a synthetic material, it is often made to resemble natural wood. So even if you like the look of solid wood, you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice that to reap the benefits of composite.

As we mentioned, composite decking is a bit more budget wise up front, but the longevity and ease of maintenance can make it worth it. When cared for, a composite deck or patio can last anywhere from 25, 30, or even 50 years.

Composite can be a slippery material. If that is a concern of yours, non-slip coatings can be applied to the surface.

All in all, both composite and solid wood make for great decks and patios. Which is right for you depends on your budget and personal preference.
