Is there anything more frustrating than a plumbing problem? We all rely heavily on the plumbing in our homes to work properly. That’s why when it doesn’t, it can be headache inducing. Some plumbing issues you really need a professional for, but some common issues may be easier to fix or avoid than you think. Here are a few examples.
A lot of serious clogs can be avoided by not flushing certain things. Most things other than toilet paper are too cumbersome on our septic systems. So called flushable wipes, paper towels, and feminine hygiene products are common clog culprits. As for the kitchen, be wary of pouring grease, coffee grounds, and pasta down your garbage disposal to avoid future clogs.
It is also important for all homeowners to know where all their plumbing pipes are located. Knowing what lies behind your walls and where can help you avoid costly mistakes as well as get to problem areas faster. Knowing where your pipes are is especially important if you are drilling or cutting into your walls. This will help you avoid puncturing or damaging essential pipes.
When you move in, you should locate where your water shut off valves are. You need to know where your water shut off is when generally working on your plumbing, but also in case of emergency. Being able to shut off water quickly can be the difference between extensive damage and a small inconvenience.
The natural inclination for most of us is to tighten bolts and screws as much as we can. This can be dangerous with plumbing, however, as overtightening can cause pipes to crack. This, of course, will lead to more leaks. Overtightening can also strip screws and fittings, making them more difficult to work with later. So, make sure that when you are working with this hardware that you aim for a snug fit and leave it at that.
The last thing on this list is to keep some plumber’s tape on hand. Just like how duct tape has a multitude of uses, so does plumber’s tape. It can prevent and seal minor leaks and is great in a pinch. Wrap a few ribbons around fittings and elbows that need extra support.
