Ways to Stay Organized When Packing to Move

Whether you’ve done it a million times before or it is your first time, moving can be an exhausting and labor-intensive process. Help the process go smoothly and stay organized with these packing tips.

Create a Timeline

Before you get started, it can be helpful to create a timeline leading up to the day of your move. This will help you know what to pack and when. Decor and pictures, for example, won’t be needed leading up to your move and therefore can be packed away early on. Things like dishes and personal care products, however, will need to be packed away the day of your move or a few days before. Having a timeline will help you schedule when to pack certain items.

Gather Supplies

Before you can begin to pack, you will need packing and moving supplies. You can save money buying supplies by first asking friends, family, and neighbors if they have any boxes or packing tape leftover from their moves. Try to get an adequate amount in order to reduce or cut out altogether unnecessary trips to the home improvement store. Don’t forget things like newspapers and bubble wrap. These materials are great for wrapping breakables before packing them. Additionally, a dolly is useful for moving heavy items and moving straps are the key to holding boxes and furniture in place in your moving truck.

Make an Inventory

Next, go room by room and make an inventory of items. This can help you to pack like items together as well as make unpacking and finding items easier when you get to your new home. Some people find that using colored stickers or markers when labeling boxes is also helpful in knowing what goes where. This way, you can know what boxes need to be put where immediately on moving day. Taking stock of what you have will also help you determine what items are worth taking along and which ones should be donated.

Clearly Mark Essentials

One of the most stressful things about moving into a new place is not being able to find things when you need them. You can reduce this kind of stress by packing a box of essentials and labeling it as “open first”. Things like phone chargers, toiletries, and utensils are great items to put in this box. That way, you can settle in and unpack at a reasonable rate and avoid being frustrated at the same time.

At the end of the day, moving is a stressful thing. But if you remember these tips the next time you need to pack for a move, it can be a little less stressful.
